WHAT IS THE EVENT ABOUT?

The ENERGY CHARTER TREATY is a complex and incoherent legal document to many, partly because it was never open to public participation during its negotiation.

The key concern is that non-western Europe states were much less active in the process. It was reported that some negotiators failed to grasp key concepts and terms of the treaty which, to date, gives a high latitude of interpretation to the arbitrators who determine most of the lawsuits brought under the treaty in favor of investors.

Main focus: should Kenya reconsider its accession to the treaty now that it has no clear distinction between fossil fuels and renewable sources of energy.
