Update: Petroleum Act, 2019

On 12 March 2019, the President of the Republic of Kenya Assented to the Petroleum Act, 2019 and the Energy Act, 2019. The Acts commenced on 28 March 2019 and together they regulate the Upstream Petroleum Industry and will regulate various aspects of the intended production that will begin in 2022.

The Kenya Civil Society Platform on Oil & Gas currently conducting further analysis on various aspects of the Acts and shall share additional information. From our preliminary analysis, the four big changes are with regards to:

1. 1. Contract Transparency;
   2. Revenue Sharing;
   3. Community Rights; and
   4. Increased share of Government of Kenya Revenues
